12 Lessons In Leadership From John Wooden – Bonus Article

For those of you that do not know of John Wooden and enjoy what you see here, I urge you to read more at http://www.coachwooden.com/

I ran a series of articles on the various bricks of his pyramid of success.  You can find those here – https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/john-wooden-pyramid-success-series-enthusiasm-1-15-matthew-anders/

Today is a bonus that will focus on the 12 Lessons in Leadership that is found at the bottom of the pyramid:

  1. Good Values Attract Good People – Maybe due to all the reading and listening I have been doing around the law of attraction my attention is drawn to the idea of putting out good energy to attract good energy.  It is what we offer up and how we treat others that will come back to us.
  2. Love Is The Most Powerful Four-Letter Word – This one can stand up by itself without any comment.  We can even exchange the word “word” with “force” as love is unstoppable.
  3. Call Yourself A Teacher – When you teach, you get to learn twice, and by sharing the knowledge we actually help support lesson 9.
  4. Emotion Is Your Enemy – This ties back to the pyramid and the idea of self-control.  We must learn to respond to situations not react.
  5. It Takes 10 Hands To Make A Basket – As a coach, John had to bring basketball into the lesson.  This aligns with the pyramid brick of team spirit.  One man alone with 2 hands cannot win the game of basketball against a team of 5.  Or the popular saying “teamwork makes the dream work.”
  6. Little Things Make Big Things Happen – Call it blocking and tackling or mastery of the basics.  It generally turns out that if you can master the small basic things you will be well prepared to deal with the big things.
  7. Make Each Day Your Masterpiece – If you are not going to give each day your all your day is not going to give all you desire.  Consistency is key.
  8. The Carrot Is Mightier Than A Stick – This is the catching more bees with honey scenario.  It is always better to lead with actions than with words, and the words need to be supportive and encouraging.  Motivation is mightier than confrontation.
  9. Make Greatness Attainable By All – What good is it if only one member of the team is great?  When everyone gets the better the team achieves even more.  Fix and focus on the weak link until it is no longer the weakness.
  10. Seek Significant Change – Alway look to improve, never settle.
  11. Don’t Look At The Scoreboard – Do not be distracted by others, but focus on what you are doing and make sure you are doing your best.
  12. Adversity Is Your Asset – I think about the quote, “If it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you.”  This is what I feel this lesson is all about.  It is in times of adversity that we are forced to rise above and achieve greatness.
